Product innovation

The innovation centers on L'Oréal's Glyco-Complex technology, which combines 10% glycolic acid with aloe vera and glycerin to balance exfoliation with hydration. The formula uses a buffering system that maintains an optimal pH for efficacy while minimising irritation.

The product also incorporates reflective microparticles that provide immediate visual brightening while the chemical exfoliation works over time.

The serum addresses the growing mass market demand for clinical skincare ingredients previously limited to premium price points. Its competitive advantage stems from offering a higher glycolic acid concentration than typical mass market products while maintaining an accessible price point. The formula's dual immediate and long-term benefits also satisfy consumer demand for visible results in both time frames.

The product was developed as part of L'Oréal's strategy to democratise high-performance skincare ingredients. While the development focused on creating a formula that would deliver professional-level results while remaining suitable for at-home use by skincare enthusiasts.

According to the brand 'Extensive consumer testing was conducted across diverse skin types and tones to ensure tolerability and efficacy.'

Trend

This product aligns with what Mintel termed the "masstige acid movement," with their 2022 Ingredient Trends report noting that mass market products containing chemical exfoliants grew by 32% while unit costs decreased by 17%.

According to NielsenIQ data, glycolic acid became the fastest-growing acid ingredient in mass skincare, with sales increasing 45% year-over-year.

The product also capitalises on the "skintellectual" consumer trend identified by Euromonitor, with 64% of skincare consumers reporting increased knowledge about active ingredients.
